Akumal Monkey Sanctuary & Rescued Animals

Of course, the Akumal Monkey Sanctuary should not go unmentioned. If your kids enjoyed the interaction with animals in Xcaret or Dolphinaris, and want more, this is the right place to visit. The Akumal Monkey Sanctuary is home not only for monkeys but also to 55 other different species. They were donated by circuses, zoos and the owners that couldn’t take care of their wild pets any more. Our team of biologists and vets rehabilitate the animals and, if possible, bring them back into their native habitat.

Another mission of the institution is to organize educative programs for local schools and hold the tours for the vacationers. We draw our visitor’s attention on the acute issue of some species extinction and explain that the wild animals are not pets. The guide will tell you interesting facts about the Sanctuary’s residents like their habits, diet, routine and how they got here. After that, and the best part of the tour is interaction with the monkeys, parrots and snakes.

We are located a little bit further than other amusement parks (38 km or 23 miles) in the Akumal village, but the tour really worth the ride.

We wish you amazing family vacations in Rivera Maya and we are always happy to see you!
